Roma

Roma is the Italian and Latin name for Rome. As a given name in that tradition, it is a direct place-name choice rather than a word literally meaning “citizen of Rome.” Ancient Roman religion also personified the city as Roma, adding a classical cultural association to the geographical one.

The spelling has other uses, including as a short form in some naming traditions and as an ethnic term for the Roma people. Those uses have their own histories and should not be collapsed into one definition. A family choosing Roma for the city can describe that specific connection clearly. Its longstanding appearance in American birth records also places it beyond a purely recent travel-name fashion.
