Roxy

Roxy began as a short form of Roxana, Roxanna, or Roxanne. Those longer names descend from an ancient Iranian name associated with brightness and shining. The name family reached Greek and Latin through Roxana, the Bactrian woman who married Alexander the Great, and later developed different forms in European languages.

Roxy takes the opening of that longer name and adds a familiar English nickname ending. It can be chosen as a complete first name or kept as an everyday form of Roxanne, depending on how much flexibility a family wants. Roxie is another established spelling of the short form. Although its compact shape feels informal, the underlying name family reaches back into ancient history and keeps its connection with light.
