Ruby

Ruby is a gemstone name with a connection to the color red: its word history leads back to the Latin ruber, meaning “red.” The stone gives the name its literal meaning. Ideas such as protection or good fortune belong to the symbolism people attach to rubies, rather than to the translation of the name itself.

Ruby has a longer history as a given name than its bright, informal sound might suggest, with use recorded centuries before the Victorian enthusiasm for jewel names. Pearl and Opal share that gemstone tradition. Ruby is also July’s birthstone, offering a possible connection to a birth month or family anniversary. Its four letters and two syllables make it a complete, compact name without needing a longer formal version.
