Sable

Sable is an English word name with both animal and color associations. The sable is a small mammal known for its dark fur, and its name has also been used for a rich black color. Those connections give the given name a natural-world background as well as a place in the language of color.

The television character Sable Colby offers a separate cultural association, but the word existed long before the character. Parents comparing Sable with other nature names may value that it refers to an animal without sounding like an everyday pet name. Its two-syllable form stands on its own and does not require a longer formal version.
