Safa

Safa is a Latin-letter rendering of an Arabic name associated with purity, clarity, or serenity. Safaa is another spelling that can make the longer final vowel more visible. Romanization can also bring distinct Arabic words close together on the page, so the intended Arabic written form matters when explaining a precise meaning.

The similarly rendered name al-Safa is familiar as one of the hills visited during pilgrimage rituals in Mecca, giving the spelling an additional religious association. Families may be drawn to the personal name’s meaning, that connection, or an ancestor’s name. Safa is brief enough for everyday use without requiring a longer version or an invented nickname.
