Samantha

Samantha’s exact origin is uncertain. It is often explained as a feminine form of Samuel, sometimes with an ending connected to the Greek word for “flower.” That is a proposed construction rather than a proven translation, so “told by God” should not be treated as a securely established meaning for Samantha itself.

The name was in English-language use before the television series Bewitched made Samantha Stephens a familiar character. Samantha Jones in Sex and the City supplies a later, very different association. Sam, Sammy, and Sammie are established short forms, giving the four-syllable full name a compact everyday alternative. Samanta is a related spelling used in several languages, with its own pronunciation traditions.
