Samia

Samia is a spelling of the Arabic name Samiya, the feminine counterpart of Sami. Its meaning is connected with elevation and loftiness, commonly expressed as “sublime” or “exalted.” The idea is figurative as well as physical: the name belongs to a vocabulary of high standing and distinction, giving it a clear Arabic linguistic foundation.

The form also travels across languages, including Bengali, where Samia is used in Muslim naming traditions. Samiya makes the y sound explicit in Latin letters, while Samia presents the same name more compactly. Families may choose between them according to their own language and documents. For someone honoring a relative named Sami, the relationship is direct, and the feminine form preserves the same root while giving the name its own ending.
