Sander

Sander developed as a shortened form of Alexander in Dutch and Scandinavian use. Alexander comes from Greek elements associated with defending and men, traditionally interpreted as “defending men” or “defender of men.” Sander retains the later portion of that longer name, giving it a recognizable connection without the opening Alex- syllables.

The relationship places Sander in the same broad family as Xander, although the spellings have different language histories. It can be used as a full first name, not only as a private nickname for an Alexander. For a family working across Dutch, Scandinavian, and English-speaking settings, that background can help explain the choice. Its compact form and established use distinguish it from an occupational reading of the ordinary English word sander.
