Sapphire

Sapphire is an English gemstone name, most often associated with a rich blue stone. Sapphires can occur in other colors, so “blue” captures a familiar association rather than the complete meaning of the name. The gemstone word has a long history through Greek and Latin, and the stone is traditionally associated with September birthdays.

As a personal name, Sapphire has a more elaborate sound than short gemstone choices such as Pearl or Jade. Saffie is a possible affectionate form. The writer who published Push uses Sapphire as her pen name, adding a literary connection. Sapphira is a related historical name, but parents may prefer Sapphire when the direct English gemstone word is the main attraction.
