Sebastien

Sebastien is the unaccented spelling of French Sébastien, a form of Sebastian. The older Greek name referred to someone from Sebaste, a place-name derived from sebastos, meaning “venerable” or “revered.” Several ancient towns carried that honorific name, so the geographical meaning and the word behind the place-name are two stages of the same history.

Saint Sebastian helped carry the name across Christian Europe, where each language developed its own form. French Sébastien keeps a distinctive ending, and Sebastien preserves it when accents are omitted. The pronunciation of the French form differs from the usual English Sebastian, making family preference worth discussing. Seb offers a straightforward shortening, while the full spelling retains the French connection for parents honoring that language or a relative who used it.
