Sedona

Sedona is a place name associated with the Arizona city and its landscape. The city was named for Sedona Arabella Schnebly, the wife of its first postmaster, so the place itself ultimately commemorates a person. That makes its history different from a city name formed directly from a river, mountain, or local plant.

The original personal name was reportedly devised by Schnebly’s mother. Similarities to Sidonia or Cydonia have led to proposed explanations involving Sidon or quince, but they do not establish a certain meaning. Families choosing Sedona for the Arizona connection can embrace that documented place story without needing an unproven ancient translation. Basketball player Sedona Prince is another public bearer of the name.
