Selah

Selah comes from a Hebrew term found repeatedly in the Psalms. Its exact meaning is uncertain, although it is often interpreted as a musical pause or an instruction connected with the performance of a psalm. The popular phrase “pause and reflect” is an interpretation, not a securely established literal translation.

That setting gives Selah a connection with both sacred poetry and music. Lauryn Hill chose the name for her daughter, providing a familiar modern bearer. SEE-luh is a common English pronunciation, though families may use other forms. Parents drawn to its reflective association can value that symbolism while still being clear about what remains unknown in the word’s history.
