Sergio

Sergio is an Italian and Spanish form of Sergius, an old Roman family name. Its ultimate meaning is unknown, despite the translation “servant” that sometimes accompanies it. The name’s Roman lineage is well established enough to describe without assigning it an unsupported ancient occupation or personality trait.

Director Sergio Leone and footballer Sergio Ramos show the name in different cultural settings. Its pronunciation also changes between Italian and Spanish, particularly in the middle consonants, so a family’s language matters more than a single English sound guide. Serge and Sergei are related forms in other languages; they offer family connections rather than interchangeable spellings in every context.
