Shawn

Shawn is an English-language spelling of Sean, the Irish form of John. Through that name family it reaches a Hebrew root commonly understood as “God is gracious.” The spelling writes out a sound that may be less obvious to an English reader encountering Seán for the first time, while preserving the same underlying name connection.

Shaun is another close spelling comparison. Shawn has been used for both boys and girls, although the balance varies by period and place; no fixed proportion belongs in the meaning itself. Longer names beginning with Shawn may be later combinations rather than direct historical variants. For a family honoring a Sean or John, Shawn supplies a different written form within the same broad tradition.
