Silvia

Silvia is a Latin name connected with silva, meaning “wood” or “forest.” It is the older spelling beside Sylvia, whose y became familiar in English. The woodland meaning is direct, giving Silvia a nature connection that does not depend on a modern translation or an imaginative reinterpretation of an unrelated root.

The name belongs to the same Roman name family as Silvius, while Silvia and Sylvia are feminine forms with distinct spelling traditions. Silvia is used in several European languages, and the vowels may be pronounced differently across them. Silvie can serve as a familiar form. Its history combines a classical linguistic background with a simple landscape meaning that remains understandable today.
