Stefano

Stefano is the Italian form of Stephen, ultimately from Greek stephanos, meaning “crown” or “wreath.” In the ancient world, a wreath could mark victory or honor, giving the word a broader setting than a royal crown alone. The name became established in Christian traditions through Stephen, remembered in Acts as the first Christian martyr.

Italian keeps the final -o, while related languages use forms such as Stefan, Esteban, and Étienne. These names can honor the same figure or family member while expressing different linguistic connections. Stefano is therefore a direct way to carry an Italian form of a familiar international name. Stef is a possible short form, but the full name preserves both the Greek word behind it and the Italian shape developed through centuries of use.
