Suri

Suri is an established Yiddish form of Sarah, the Hebrew name traditionally meaning princess. In that name family, it connects with the biblical Sarah, wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac. Its compact form preserves a Jewish naming tradition that predates the name’s wider recognition in celebrity news.

The choice of Suri for Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s daughter brought the spelling to a much larger audience. Similar-looking words and names also occur in other languages, but those do not automatically combine into one shared etymology. For a family choosing Suri through Sarah, the princess meaning and Yiddish history give the clearest explanation. A different family tradition would need its own language-specific account.
