Syrus

Syrus has more than one possible history. In the Greek and Latin tradition it is associated with Syria or a Syrian person, and the name appears in early Christian saint traditions. In modern English use, some families may instead intend Syrus as a spelling of Cyrus, the Persian royal name.

Those routes should not be combined into a single meaning such as Syrian sun. They may also lead to different pronunciations, with some families following the older Syrus sound and others following Cyrus. The intended family or cultural connection is therefore particularly useful here. The shared letters make the names easy to compare, but do not prove that every Syrus has the same derivation.
