Terence

Terence comes from the Roman family name Terentius, whose original meaning is uncertain. One of its most important bearers is the Roman playwright known in English as Terence, whose Latin comedies have been read and performed for centuries. That literary history gives the name a substantial classical background even without a settled literal translation.

The name later became familiar in English-speaking communities, including Irish families, and appears in several spellings such as Terrence and Terrance. These forms share a recognizable identity while preserving different family preferences. Parents choosing Terence may be honoring a relative or responding to its literary history. Its connection with ancient drama offers a more secure starting point than proposed meanings such as soft or thresher, which remain explanations rather than established facts.
