Teresa

Teresa is an established name with a long history in Spanish and Portuguese usage. Its ultimate origin is uncertain: proposed explanations connect it with Greek words for harvest or summer, or with a place name. The fame of Saint Teresa of Ávila helped spread the name, but that religious history does not settle its etymology.

Tess, Tessa, and Teri offer several familiar short forms, while Theresa adds the h common in another spelling tradition. Thérèse provides a French comparison with a different ending and pronunciation. Parents choosing Teresa can honor a relative or saint while treating its proposed meanings honestly, rather than relying on a single definite translation such as “harvester.”
