Tiberius

Tiberius is an ancient Roman name connected with the Tiber, the river running through Rome. Its usual interpretation is “of the Tiber.” In Roman naming practice it served as a personal name, and its best-known historical bearer is the emperor Tiberius, whose association gives the spelling a strong classical identity.

The name also appears in modern fiction, including James Tiberius Kirk of Star Trek. That use has introduced the full form to many readers and viewers outside Roman history. Italian Tiberio belongs to the same name family, with a different ending. Parents considering Tiberius may be drawn to the river, ancient Rome, or a fictional namesake; each is a distinct association, while the geographical connection remains the core explanation of the name.
