Trevor

Trevor comes from a Welsh place-name and surname tradition. It is connected with Trefor, built from elements meaning a settlement or village and “large.” The meaning describes a place, rather than the size or status of the person who later carries the name. Its surname background explains how a geographical description became a personal name.

Trefor preserves the Welsh written form, while Trevor reflects an established anglicized spelling. Trever is another spelling and Trev a familiar short form. These close comparisons are more informative than treating every modern name beginning with Trev as a historical variant. Trevor's roots are specifically Welsh, even though the given name is now familiar to many English-speaking families elsewhere.
