Urban

Urban comes from Latin Urbanus, a Roman name built on urbs, meaning city. Its sense is of the city or a city dweller. The modern English adjective urban shares this ancestry, but the personal name has its own much older history in European naming.

A man called Urbanus is greeted in the New Testament, and eight popes later bore the name in its Latin or translated forms. These religious connections helped carry it across languages, including German and Swedish. Urbano is the Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese form, while Urbain is French. Urban can therefore be chosen for a city association, an inherited European name, or a religious connection. Its familiar English-word appearance sits alongside a formal naming tradition that began long before modern urban life.
