Vanessa

Vanessa was created by Jonathan Swift using parts of Esther Vanhomrigh’s name and appeared in his poem Cadenus and Vanessa. Its original meaning is therefore a personal literary construction rather than a word translated from an ancient language. Later, Vanessa became the name of a butterfly genus.

The butterfly association is real, but it came after the invented personal name rather than explaining its earliest origin. Nessa and Van are possible short forms. Families choosing Vanessa for literature or nature may value different parts of that history. The full name can stand on its own without a separate formal expansion.
