Vasco

Vasco is a traditional Portuguese and Spanish name related to the older form Velasco. One explanation connects that name with a Basque word for crow, but the derivation is not fully certain. Its long Iberian use is clearer than any single literal translation, making family or regional history a strong part of its identity.

Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama is its most widely recognized historical bearer. That connection gives the name a place in the history of exploration, although a family may choose Vasco for entirely different ancestral or personal reasons. Velasco is also encountered as a surname, showing how the older name has continued in more than one form. Vasco’s compact two-syllable structure keeps a traditional name concise without relying on a nickname.
