Wilhelmina

Wilhelmina is a feminine form of Wilhelm, the German and Dutch relative of William. Its older elements concern will or desire and a helmet, giving the conventional interpretation “resolute protector” or “resolute protection.” Those interpretations summarize the components rather than predicting how a child will behave.

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands supplies a substantial historical association, while Wilhelmina “Mina” Harker in Dracula gives it a literary one. Mina, Minna, and Minnie offer established shorter forms with different everyday effects. The full name preserves a visible connection with Wilhelm and William, making it useful for a family honor. Wilhelmine is a related form with a different final vowel.
