Winry

Winry is best known through Winry Rockbell, the mechanic in Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist manga and its animated adaptations. The character gives the name a clear cultural identity even though a literal etymology has not been securely established. Its use in a Japanese work does not mean that its Latin-letter syllables form a Japanese phrase.

The opening resembles Winnie and Winifred, leading to suggestions that Winry may have been inspired by that name family. Without confirmation, however, Winifred’s peace-related meaning should not be transferred to Winry as fact. A family choosing the name for the character has a specific literary connection available, rather than needing a guessed ancient translation to explain it.
