Yanis

Yanis is a form in the John name family, closely associated with Greek Yannis or Giannis and used in French-speaking communities. The family ultimately goes back to Hebrew Yohanan, meaning “God is gracious.” The route through Greek gives Yanis a different opening and ending from English John while preserving the same older name connection.

The single n distinguishes Yanis from Yannis, though both spellings occur as ways of representing related forms in Latin letters. A family may choose Yanis because it matches the spelling used by relatives or because it works within a French-speaking environment. Its history shows how widely the John family has traveled: a familiar religious name can take a compact local form that looks quite different while keeping the underlying meaning intact.
