Yeshua

Yeshua is a shortened Hebrew form of Yehoshua, the name represented in English as Joshua. It is traditionally understood through a connection with Yahweh and salvation. Yeshua also has particular importance in Christianity as the Semitic name behind the Greek and later English forms used for Jesus.

The spelling gives the name a different spoken rhythm from English Joshua and makes its Hebrew connection visible. Yehoshua offers a longer related form, while Joshua provides a familiar English counterpart. Families choosing Yeshua may be preserving a language or religious tradition. Those associations are more specific than simply selecting a new spelling of Joshua, even though the names share a historical family.
