Yvette

Yvette is a French feminine form related to Yves, ultimately connected with an older Germanic element meaning “yew.” Its botanical background is less obvious in English than that of a direct tree name such as Willow, but it is still central to the traditional explanation of the name.

The -ette ending gives Yvette a distinctly French formation, while Yvonne belongs to the same wider family with a different ending. Colette and Odette share a similar style but do not have the same root or meaning. The initial y is pronounced as a vowel in the familiar French and English readings. Yvette can therefore preserve both a French naming tradition and a quieter connection with the natural world.
