Zaila

Zaila is a modern name whose literal origin is not securely established. It is often compared with Zayla, but the shared spelling pattern does not supply a dependable ancient translation. The exact form has a strong contemporary association through Zaila Avant-garde, who won the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 2021.

Avant-garde became the competition’s first Black American champion and its first winner from Louisiana. That documented achievement gives the name a story connected with language, learning, and a specific trailblazer. Her name is pronounced with three syllables, while some families using Zaila may choose a two-syllable form. Parents can therefore decide whether they intend a namesake connection and introduce their preferred pronunciation without relying on an invented meaning.
