Zaira

Zaira is an Italian and Spanish form associated with Zaïre, the heroine of Voltaire's play. Bellini later used Zaira for the heroine and title of an opera based on that work. This literary route is clearer than describing the name as an Irish invention or assigning it the unrelated Hebrew meaning “God remembers.”

An Arabic floral connection is sometimes proposed behind the literary name, but it should not be presented as the only certain explanation. Zaira's pronunciation varies between Italian, Spanish, and English-speaking families, especially the opening sound and vowel sequence. Parents may value its operatic history or its compact shape while keeping the preferred pronunciation and cultural association explicit.
