Zalman

Zalman is a Yiddish form in the Solomon name family. The older Hebrew name is connected with shalom, meaning peace. Zalman is therefore not a separate Yiddish word that happens to have the same translation; it is a personal-name form developed within a particular linguistic and cultural tradition.

Its relationship with Solomon can be useful when tracing family names across records written in different languages. Hebrew Shlomo belongs to the same wider family, although the spellings look quite different in Latin letters. Choosing Zalman can preserve the Yiddish form used by a relative while keeping its older Hebrew meaning and name-family connection.
