Zelda

Zelda can be a short form of Griselda, a name traditionally interpreted through Germanic elements for gray and battle. There is also a separate Yiddish Zelda, sometimes connected with Zelig and an idea of happiness or blessing. These histories should not be combined into one elaborate meaning; a family's language or longer-name connection helps distinguish them.

Writer Zelda Fitzgerald gives the name a Jazz Age association, while The Legend of Zelda connects it with a different generation of storytelling. Zelda stands comfortably as a complete name even when it began as a shortening. Its prominent initial Z and two-syllable shape make it recognizable without requiring a longer form on official documents.
