Zeno

Zeno is a form of Greek Zenon, a name derived from Zeus, the chief god in ancient Greek religion. Its meaning is therefore best described as a connection with Zeus. The name has a particularly strong philosophical history through two different thinkers: Zeno of Elea, associated with famous paradoxes about motion, and Zeno of Citium, who founded the Stoic school.

Those philosophers give Zeno a substantial intellectual background despite its short spelling. Italian literature adds another association through Zeno Cosini, the narrator of Italo Svevo’s novel known in English as Zeno’s Conscience or Confessions of Zeno. Parents interested in philosophy or literature may find several distinct references here. Zenon preserves more of the Greek form, while Zeno is familiar in Latinized and Italian use.
