Zinnia

Zinnia is a flower name whose botanical name honors the eighteenth-century German botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn. Its meaning is therefore best explained through the flower and its namesake, rather than as an ancient word translating a particular virtue. The opening z gives it a distinctive sound among familiar English floral names.

Zinnia Wormwood, Matilda’s mother in Roald Dahl’s story, provides a literary association. Floral symbolism can attach ideas such as remembrance or friendship to zinnias, but those are cultural associations rather than the literal etymology. Families can choose the name for the flower itself, its appearance, or a personal gardening connection without needing to adopt one fixed symbolic meaning.
