Zion

Zion is a biblical place name closely associated with Jerusalem. Over time it acquired broader religious and cultural meanings beyond one physical location. Its significance is therefore clearer than a simple literal translation such as “highest point,” which does not fully explain either the word's uncertain origin or its later history.

Sion is an alternative form found in other languages and older texts. English speakers commonly give Zion two syllables, while the Hebrew pronunciation begins differently. The name can carry a strong connection to faith, heritage, or place, so a family's intended association is an important part of its story alongside the sound itself.
