Abdurrahman

Abdurrahman is an Arabic devotional name meaning servant of the Most Merciful. It joins abd, servant, with al-Rahman, a divine name in Islam. The r sound in its middle reflects the way the Arabic article is pronounced before the following r, which helps explain the spelling rather than making it a different name.

Abd al-Rahman and Abdulrahman are other Latin-letter forms of the same construction. The name has been carried by scholars and rulers throughout Islamic history, giving it an established religious and historical background. Families may keep the joined Abdurrahman spelling because it reflects the form already familiar in their own community.
