Abril

Abril is the word for April in Spanish, Catalan, and Portuguese, and it is used as a given name. Its immediate meaning is the month. The older Latin month name has an uncertain etymology: a connection with opening is often proposed, but “to open” should not replace the clear modern meaning of Abril itself.

For families with a personal connection to April, Abril offers a different linguistic form without losing the calendar association. It is concise on paper and has a different emphasis from the English name April. Parents can compare the versions aloud alongside their surname and the languages used at home. Abril also works beyond an April birthday, just as other month names can commemorate a memory, season, or person rather than a child's birth date.
