Adair

Adair came into use as a given name through a surname, traditionally associated with Scotland and traced to a form of Edgar. Edgar contains Old English elements for wealth or prosperity and a spear. Those elements belong to the older personal name behind the surname, rather than describing the modern spelling Adair word by word.

Its surname history helps explain why Adair can be used for both boys and girls. It may carry a direct family connection, while also standing comfortably as a first name without an inherited surname link. The relationship to Edgar offers an unexpected piece of its background, joining Adair's lighter sound with an old Germanic naming tradition built from two meaningful elements.
