Allen

Allen is a spelling of Alan and also an established surname. Alan’s ultimate origin is uncertain, despite the confident translations “handsome” or “cheerful” sometimes supplied for it. The name’s long history and family relationships are clearer than any single ancient meaning, so uncertainty is an important part of an accurate account.

Al, Len, and Lenny offer different everyday options. Alan, Allan, and Allen commonly sound alike in English, making the written form a meaningful choice when honoring a relative or preserving a surname. Allen may be especially appealing when it already appears in a family tree, where the personal connection can be more specific than an uncertain linguistic interpretation.
