Amare

Amare is an Ethiopian name associated with the Amharic expression for being good-looking or handsome. Its meaning belongs to a particular language tradition rather than to a single naming system shared across Africa. In Ethiopic writing it appears as አማረ, and the Latin spelling represents that name for readers using a different alphabet.

The name may be familiar to basketball followers through Amar’e Stoudemire, whose spelling includes an apostrophe. That public association is separate from the Ethiopian linguistic background. For a family choosing Amare, its meaning can be an affectionate celebration of a child without suggesting that appearance determines their worth or personality. The full spelling already has an open, flowing shape, so it can work as an everyday name without a required short form.
