Annabeth

Annabeth joins Anna to Beth, a familiar short form of Elizabeth. Anna traces back to Hannah and the meaning favor or grace, while Elizabeth is traditionally explained as God is my oath. The compound keeps both names recognizable and can be a way of honoring two relatives without using a hyphen or separate middle name.

Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson books give Annabeth a prominent literary association through Annabeth Chase, the daughter of Athena. Actress Annabeth Gish is another recognizable bearer. These examples show that the name has an independent life beyond its components. Annie and Beth are natural shorter forms, but neither is required. Families can use the full Annabeth every day while retaining the distinct histories of Anna and Elizabeth within it.
