Annie

Annie is an affectionate form of Ann or Anne, belonging to the Hebrew name family traditionally associated with “grace.” It has also been used as a complete first name for generations. Choosing Annie therefore does not require a longer name on the birth certificate, although Ann, Anne, and Anna can all provide a family connection.

The musical Annie, based on Little Orphan Annie, gives the name a strong theatrical association. Annie Oakley and the song “Annie Laurie” provide other familiar references. Anni is an alternative spelling, while Annie keeps the form most readily associated with those English-language traditions. Its two syllables offer a softer everyday rhythm than the one-syllable Ann without changing the underlying name family.
