Antony

Antony is an English form of the Roman family name Antonius, whose deeper origin is uncertain. The frequently repeated meaning “priceless” is not a secure translation of that Roman name. The spelling without h has a long English history and keeps the older Antonius connection particularly visible.

Marcus Antonius is conventionally known in English as Mark Antony, giving this spelling a familiar classical association. The h in Anthony was added later under the influence of a mistaken connection with a Greek word for flower. Tony is a familiar short form of either spelling. Choosing Antony therefore preserves an established historical form rather than simply removing a letter from a newer name.
