Bernardo

Bernardo is an Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese form of Bernard, a Germanic name traditionally interpreted as “strong as a bear.” The animal comparison comes from the name’s older elements rather than from a modern character or surname. The final o distinguishes this form while preserving the same underlying family.

Bernardo in West Side Story supplies a familiar theatrical and film association. Bernard is the shorter English comparison, while Bernardo retains a form established across several Romance languages. A family may prefer the spelling already used by relatives or in a home language, with pronunciation reflecting that tradition rather than one universal English rendering.
