Bernard

Bernard combines Germanic elements referring to a bear and to bravery or strength. The familiar interpretation “brave as a bear” captures that older imagery. Its history includes several saints, and the Saint Bernard dog takes its name through the Alpine hospice associated with Saint Bernard of Menthon.

Playwright George Bernard Shaw, novelist Bernard Malamud, and art historian Bernard Berenson give the name substantial literary and intellectual connections. Bernie is an established familiar form, while Bernhard and Bernardo belong to the wider international family. Bernard can therefore carry an animal image, a family tribute, or a cultural namesake, with a long record of use that supports each new generation of bearers.
