Bodie

Bodie can be chosen as a spelling related to Bodhi, the Sanskrit word for awakening, or through a separate surname connection such as Bode. These routes should not be collapsed into one meaning. A family’s intended source determines whether the Buddhist association is part of the name’s story.

The ie ending helps many English readers anticipate a two-syllable pronunciation. Bo is a possible nickname, while Bodie itself is already informal in sound. Parents comparing Bodie with Bodhi may prefer the latter when preserving the Sanskrit word is important. Similar pronunciation alone does not make every bearer’s family history the same.
