Brennan

Brennan is an Irish surname commonly traced to Ó Braonáin, meaning “descendant of Braonán.” The older personal name is connected with braon, a word for a drop or moisture, which has led to interpretations involving sorrow. Calling every Brennan “the sad one” turns a layered surname history into an overly simple description.

Bren is an easy short form, while Brennen and Brennon are spelling alternatives. Brendan is close in sound but has a different naming history. Parents using Brennan to preserve a family surname may value the inherited spelling most, while those choosing it as a first name can compare how the final syllable sounds with their surname.
