Brenton

Brenton comes from an English surname associated with Brenton near Exminster in Devon. The place name is commonly connected with an older personal name and a settlement element. This geographical history places it among the English surnames that preserve a connection with a settlement and the people who lived there.

Australian actor Brenton Thwaites is a recognizable modern bearer of the first name. The surname form gives Brenton a different history from Brendan, which belongs to an Irish personal-name tradition, despite their similar sounds. A family might choose Brenton for an ancestral surname, a Devon connection, or the established given name itself. Its final ton carries the familiar structure of English place naming without requiring a modern child to share any particular connection with the original location.
